Real Ale in the Campo de Gibraltar?

Jackie Cruz - Manifesto

19/09/2013

Anyone visiting Gibraltar may be surprised to know that the British overseas territory doesn’t produce or serve traditional real ales, such as you would find in any typical English pub. This is because producing this British beverage is almost impossible on the Rock, due to a lack of water and space to grow hops and other ingredients. It’s well known for its stylish port, world-class polo matches and an abundance of lush golf courses, however Sotogrande is also an ideal place to watch the competitive and exciting equestrian sport of dressage. One of the best features about life here in Spain is that most things tend to happen a little bit later in the evening. People work later, eat later and are still soaking up the sun on the beach until sunset, or even afterwards during the summer months. They do this of course in a bid to escape the sweltering afternoon heat, which on the Costa del Sol can occasionally hit ice-cream melting highs of 42c (107f). It’s good news for those shopaholics among us who like nothing more than to indulge in a bit of nocturnal retail therapy during the cooler evening hours.
