It may not be known as a tourist magnet, but La Línea has a lot to offer the discerning visitor – if you know where to look. Overshadowed somewhat by its more famous neighbour Gibraltar, it’s fair to say many tourists bypass this town on their way to the Rock. However, thanks to its symbiotic relationship with the British overseas territory, there’s a wealth of interesting places to visit in La Línea.
For starters, history buffs may want to visit the World War Two bunkers, of which there are 152 in total. Built on the orders of Hitler, a few of the best-preserved structures can be found in Reina Sofia Park in the centre. It’s a little known fact that they were constructed following Germany’s invasion of France, when the Führer hatched a plan to invade Gibraltar, under the codename of Operation Felix. But following Germany’s defeat in Russia, the bunkers took on a defensive role against a possible allied attack from Gibraltar. This is one of the stops you’ll get to visit should you embark on a free guided tour from the townhall.
Elsewhere on the tour’s itinerary is the Bull Fighting Museum (Museo Taurino), which can be found opposite the bullring on Calle San José. This quaint little museum is said to house one of the largest and most important collections of bull fighting paraphernalia in Spain. Inside you’ll find thousands of photos adorning every inch of wall space, as well as a shrine where bull fighters pray before a fight, and a cosy bar, where you’ll meet enigmatic owner Curro Cabrera Vallecillo, who charges just three euros for entrance to the museum, a beer and a tapa.
Meanwhile, the centre of town is a picturesque maze of streets leading off the main street, dotted with traditional tapas bars. As well as a visit to the new Congress Palace that hosts concerts and shows every year, the lively indoor market of Mercado de la Concepción is also a must stop, especially if you’re after some fresh fish, meat or local cheese and wine.
So next time you are planning to visit Gibraltar, why not give La Línea townhall a ring to join one of their free tours?
