It’s not all about the posh polo matches, world-renowned golf clubs, swanky yachts and the picturesque marina in Sotogrande. As many a foreign resident will attest there is a lot more to this much-loved, glamorous town than first meets the eye. For example, should you delve under the shiny exterior of this famous retreat you’ll find a healthy collection of social clubs that are ready to welcome new members with open arms. One of the most talked about and popular clubs is Sotogrande Women, a networking group launched in 2008 that organises lunches, social gatherings and charity events in and around Sotogrande.
However, far from being staid, this group of sophisticated señoritas is known to organise some rather appealing events that promise to raise a few eyebrows. For example, last April the club held a sizzling ‘Fifty Shades of Tantra’ event, where a leading expert in the field gave the ladies a few tips. Unfortunately there was no appearance of Mr Grey during the talk – apparently he was tied up. Elsewhere in the resort, those who like to practise their penmanship may want to dip their nibs in at the newly founded Sotogrande Writer’s Club. Armed with pens, paper and a propensity for prose, these budding literary types meet once every two weeks to share short stories and give each other constructive feedback on their efforts.
Last but not least is the DFAS (Decorative and Fine Arts Society) de la Frontera, which is based close to Sotogrande. These art aficionados like nothing more than to enjoy highbrow cultural lectures, trips and events, while meeting and mixing with like-minded lovers of art. So if you are new to the stylish surroundings of Sotogrande, why not join one of these foreign resident groups to find out what’s really going on in and around town?
